Fever in pregnancy linked to autism

Women who run a high temperature during gestation may double risk of having an autistic child

Web edition : Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Spiking a fever in pregnancy may contribute to autism risk in the offspring. Researchers report that women who run a high temperature while pregnant ? and don?t treat it ? appear twice as likely to have a child with autism as women who don?t report any untreated fevers.

Other studies have suggested a link between infectious diseases during gestation and a heightened risk of having a child with an autism spectrum disorder. But the new study didn?t find a specific connection between influenza and the behavioral disorders, the researchers report in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

?I think this is the largest and most careful study that?s been done on the topic of fever and influenza in autism development,? says Paul Patterson, a developmental neurobiologist at Caltech, who wasn?t part of this study.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis identified 538 children with an autism spectrum disorder, 163 others with developmental delays and 421 who were developing without any apparent problems. The children?s mothers provided health information on their pregnancies. After accounting for differences in race, child?s age, insurance, smoking, mother?s education and residence at the time of birth, the scientists found that women who had suffered an uncontrolled fever during pregnancy were roughly twice as likely to have an autistic child as mothers with no untreated fevers. Fever in gestation was also associated with a more than doubled risk of developmental delays, report the researchers, who recently also linked autism risk with obesity in pregnancy (SN: 5/19/12, p. 16).

??I think pregnancy is the key for autism,? Patterson says. Several other research groups have also zeroed in on gestation as a critical time, he notes.

Inflammation accompanies fever in the body, and inflammatory proteins called cytokines can pass through the placenta into the fetus during pregnancy, says study coauthor Ousseny Zerbo, an epidemiologist at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research in Oakland, who worked on the study while at UC Davis. This transfer would pose a risk if it alters brain development in the fetus at a crucial time, he says. ?Elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines [in utero] lead to behavioral problems in animals,? he says.

What?s more, Patterson says, the heat of fever can overactivate neurons, inducing them to fire more and damage fetal brain growth, tests in animals show.?

Patterson cautions that while the new study is better than previous work on fever and autism, much of the data are based on the mothers? memories of events that occurred years earlier. ?Recall bias is always an issue in this area,? he says. ?If you have an autistic child, you?re always searching for why that happened.?

Samsung unveils South Korea-bound Galaxy R Style: 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, LTE and ICS on board

Not satisfied with the launch of its newest creation, the Galaxy S III, Sammy's taken the wraps off of yet another member of the famed galactic family: welcome the Galaxy R Style. While Samsung isn't coming out and saying it, the device is essentially a follow-up to last year's 4.2-inch Galaxy R -- and although the handset keeps a similar form factor, it's changed quite a bit on the inside. For example, the 4.3-inch (960 x 540), 9.79mm thin R Style now houses an LTE chip, 16GB of onboard storage and a TouchWiz flavor of Ice Cream Sandwich. As if that wasn't enough, the slab also packs a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU and a 5-megapixel camera to take care of those filtered Instagram shots -- all while being powered by a 2000 mAh battery. Samsung's R Style will be priced at 700,000 won (around $590) when it goes on sale in South Korea later this year. If we were there, we'd take two.

The Tomato Genome Consortium, a group of over 300 scientists from 13 countries, has sequenced the genomes of the domesticated tomato and its wild ancestor, Solanum pimpinellifolium. This achievement is expected to lower costs and speed up efforts to improve the worldwide tomato production, making it better equipped to combat the pests, pathogens, droughts and diseases that now plague growers. The work may also speed up improvements to other crops. The sequences were reported in this week's issue of Nature.

VIB as partner in the consortium, represented by Stephane Rombauts, Jeffrey Fawcett and Yves Van de Peer (PI) was mainly leading the gene prediction that translated the raw genome sequence in biological knowledge. We setup in collaboration with groups from US, UK, Spain, The Netherlands, Italy, India, Germany and France, a dedicated group solely aiming at delivering the best possible gene set biologist could use to improve tomatoes.

Together, the sequences provide the most detailed look yet at the tomato genome, revealing the order, orientation, types and relative positions of its 35,000 genes. The sequences will help researchers uncover the relationships between tomato genes and traits and broaden their understanding of how genetics and environmental factors interact to determine a field crop's health and viability. Tomato is a member of the Solanaceae or nightshade family, and the new sequences are expected to provide reference points helpful for identifying important genes in tomato's Solanaceae relatives. The group includes potato, pepper, eggplant and petunia and is the world's most important vegetable plant family in terms of both economic value and production volume. Plant members serve as sources of food, spices and medicines.

The sequences also offer insight into how the tomato has diversified and adapted to new environments. They show that the tomato genome expanded abruptly about 60 million years ago, at a time close to one of the large mass extinctions. Subsequently, most of this genetic redundancy was lost. Some of the genes generated during that event survive till today and control some of the most appealing traits of tomato.

Previous efforts have led to the sequencing of a number of other crop plants, including rice, corn, sorghum, poplar, potato, soybean, grape and Arabidopsis thaliana, a plant widely studied as a model organism.

TGC was established as a result of a scientific conference organized in 2003 in Washington, DC. Consortium members include scientists from Argentina, Belgium, China, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The genome sequence and related resources can be accessed at the Solgenomics website and at http://mips.helmholtz-muenchen.de/plant/tomato/index.jsp

So some sort of slate, for example, is the same if it had come from different mines or cut and finished by a different manufacturer. The most natural stone has a limited lifespan (think of all the ancient buildings made of natural stone is still standing in the world) but if you have a special finish another consideration in the longevity of the finish ? both hard-wearing and lasts for years or be a character special finish to disappear under the influence of bad weather?

Obviously the choice is simple for her beauty will be completed at the time of installation of natural stone, but also how it will be seen within a few years because the gateway is the kind of structure often change even one of the advantages of natural stone that is active in second-hand market for pre-used tiles if you ever decide to replace it. Depending on the size and thickness, the largest natural stone tiles can be laid as a patio to the sand bed of slate tiles though some may need a mortar bed. But any area to be used as a driveway or parking of vehicles required for the concrete base.

Natural stone tiles are available in many shapes and sizes from 300mm wide variety of sizes and can allow you to design a unique design for your patio. This can be a regular pattern or a lot of people choose the random scheme can look just as attractive, especially for large area in a rural setting. But even with only one shape and size that you can achieve impressive terrace, for example, rectangular tiles arranged in patterns, such as brick offset looks very effective in small areas. Although natural stone tiles can be expensive, the advantage of the patio is a natural stone will look beautiful from the day it is installed for life and is available in such a variety of colors and styles that will suit all types of homes: rural, traditional or contemporary. The color in the weather, but will not fade colored concrete as an alternative to do. It is weather resistant and maintenance is relatively low, only the possibility to change the point at some point.

Although there are cheaper alternatives to natural stone in the market, and you can use porcelain tiles for patios and even some ceramic tiles giving them the level of water absorption of not low enough to beat the organic appearance of natural stone tiles on the terrace.

Barry Bonds Back With Giants? Former Slugger Wants Job, Refers To Himself As Convicted Felon

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Barry Bonds is publicly referring to himself as a convicted felon these days, and he's quick to point out that conviction was never for steroid use.

He appealed his obstruction of justice conviction from April 2011 on one count of giving an evasive answer to a 2003 grand jury investigating illegal steroids distribution.

"I went through the system. And that's what it is," Bond said Monday, attending the Diamondbacks-Giants while doing charity work through Big Brothers and Sisters of the Bay Area. "And that's what I got. I went through the system. I'm in an appeal process right now. I was never convicted of steroids."

The slugger said he met recently with Giants president and CEO Larry Baer about working for the club in some capacity, and Bonds has a personal services contract the Giants have said could go into effect once his legal proceedings were in the past.

When asked if he regrets any connection to the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, Bonds said: "Do I have any regrets? What happened happened. It's there. It is what it is. I live with it. I'm a convicted felon for obstruction of justice, and that's who I am. I live with it."

The 47-year-old home run king, looking especially lean at about 212 pounds from his new love for cycling, also spent a stint in the broadcast booth during San Francisco's 4-2 win.

"It's always a treat when he comes around," winning pitcher Barry Zito said. "I love Barry."

While Bonds will long be remembered for his surly nature and mighty swing, he acknowledges he brought on many of his issues himself. Still, dealing with all of the court dates and speculation of his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs did take a toll.

"I gave my life and soul to that game. That's what's heartbreaking. That's the hard part of it," he said. "My (reputation) was kind of iffy anyway. I created that guy out there for entertainment only. Whether you hated me or liked me, you were there. And I only wanted you there. I just wanted you to see the show. That was it. All I ever wanted was for people to have a good time and enjoy it. It was fun to come out and people would boo or yay or whatever. They all showed up to see whatever would happen next and it motivated me to play hard."

It's unclear when Bonds might begin work with the Giants, though he doesn't figure the timing would work this season.

He said he would expect his job to be different from the varying roles of former Giants first baseman J.T. Snow.

"I think my role is a little higher than that," he said, laughing. "I love J.T. a lot, though."

Bonds said if struggling two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum sought his advice, he'd provide it.

"If Lincecum wants the answers, I'll give them to him," Bonds said.

Manager Bruce Bochy said he would welcome Bonds' input if he takes a job with the club.

"We have a great hitter here who has really accomplished so much," Bochy said.

The seven-time NL MVP is busy rehabilitating from two surgeries over the past six weeks ? one for a disk injury in his lower back sustained while running and also a procedure on his hip and quadriceps area. He is scheduled to be examined by doctors Tuesday.

"I work out every day. That never changed," he said. "I'm going to die training. That's what I love to do more than anything in the world."

Bonds hasn't played since 2007 and sees no reason to formally retire just yet ? and insists his Hall of Fame chances are far from his mind.

"That's up to the writers to worry about that stuff. I'll be at home having a good time with my life and my kids. That'll take care of itself," he said. "I don't try to predict the future or analyze how other people are thinking or how it's going to turn out. I face my opponents as they come. It would be very sad if it didn't happen. That's why I don't need to comment on it. There's really no need."

He said the legal issues he has faced in recent years will always stay with him.

"It'll never go off your mind," he said. "You don't ever forget those things. You move on. I'll never forget it."

'Nasty' Spurs strike first against Thunder

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? It's a catchphrase likely coming soon to fan T-shirts, Internet memes and the lexicon of the NBA playoffs for the foreseeable future.

"I want some nasty!"

Gregg Popovich didn't just coin it. He snarled it, and the way his San Antonio Spurs obliged has the Western Conference finals off to a thrilling start.

Manu Ginobili scored 26 points and the Spurs won their 19th in a row ? tying the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs ? by rallying in the fourth quarter on the orders of their furious coach to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 in Game 1 on Sunday night.

It was a tantalizing near-upset for the young Thunder, who came as close as anybody to beating the Spurs for the first time in 46 days. But a nine-point lead didn't last after the famously mercurial 63-year-old Popovich ? the NBA's Coach of the Year ? huddled his lagging team together in the fourth and told them to "get nasty."

"I said that?" Popovich said afterward.

A nationally television audience heard it.

"The heat of the game, stuff comes up," Popovich said. "So I talked to them about they've got to get a little bit uglier, get a little more nasty, play with more fiber and take it to these guys. Meaning you have to drive it, you have to shoot it."

And when they did, the Thunder couldn't keep up.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 27 points. Russell Westbrook had 17, and insisted he was OK after taking a spill that was nasty in its own right ? face first, bracing his fall with his hands and sitting under the basket for more than a minute while the entire Thunder bench walked across the court to check on their All-Star point guard.

"I shot good shots, made good passes," Durant said. "Unfortunately, we lost."

After being held to just 16 third-quarter points, San Antonio scored 39 in the fourth. Westbrook chalked it up to a defensive breakdown that "got out of hand" but it still left the Thunder in search of the road win they'll need to in this series to reach the NBA finals for the first time since the franchise moved to Oklahoma City in 2009.

Game 2 is Tuesday night.

"How it happened is irrelevant," Thunder guard Derrick Fisher said of letting a lead slip away. "Whether we lose by 20 or lose by one, we lost."

That's something the Spurs haven't been able to say since April 11. They joined the 2001 Lakers as the only other team to carry a winning streak this long in the playoffs ? and that Los Angeles team did so on its way to a championship.

The Spurs matched the fourth-longest streak in NBA history, and with one more will become just the fourth team to surpass 20. Tim Duncan had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Tony Parker shook off a dismal start to finish with 18 points.

And of getting "nasty"?

"Pop's always trying to motivate us," Parker said.

But it was Ginobili who steered the Spurs to strike first in a highly anticipated matchup of the West's top two teams for practically the entire regular season. In his first game against the Thunder this year ? he was sidelined by injury in the three regular-season meetings ? Ginobili put up a playoff high after sputtering through the first two series.

"It just happened," Ginobili said. "I don't know how exactly because I haven't scored like this all season long, but it happened and I am very happy about it."

On the other end, Oklahoma City's own Big Three struggled to find its shot early before awakening in the second half. Durant, Westbrook and James Harden at one point through the second quarter were 5 of 21 ? a typically ominous stat line for a trio that had been responsible for nearly 70 percent of Oklahoma City's points through the playoffs so far.

The Thunder were ousted in the Western Conference finals a year ago and were in position for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs until being overtaken by the Spurs in the final month of the season. But it was a fittingly close opener for two franchises with so many similarities.

That includes Thunder general manager Sam Presti ? the architect of the Thunder's rapid turnaround from a 23-win season to consecutive Western Conference finals in just four years ? getting his big break in the NBA as intern in San Antonio.

And the Thunder didn't even need their own Big Three to keep things close.

They leaned on none more so than Fisher, whose famous game-winner for the Lakers on this same court in the 2004 playoffs has made "0.4 seconds" a phrase that needs no further explanation to the Spurs. Eight years later, and the oldest player in this series at 37, Fisher already met his playoff average at halftime and finished with 13 points.

Gary Neal added 12 points and was the only other Spurs player in double figures.

Harden lost in the first round of his matchup with Ginobili, who's also a lefty and a former Sixth Man of the Year winner. Harden finished with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting but started by missing nine of his first dozen shots.

Tipping off another conference finals couldn't happen soon enough for Oklahoma City. With nothing to do but prepare for the Spurs all week ? and be asked about the Spurs ? the Thunder grew weary of questions about being perceived underdogs. About not having the same championship pedigree. About how they'll possibly stop a team rolling through one of the 10 longest winning streaks in NBA history.

So repetitive were the questions that Durant, visibly annoyed, suggested earlier this week that someone instead ask how the Thunder are going "to come at" the Spurs. That didn't stop Oklahoma City from facing more of the same at shootaround Sunday morning, when Thunder coach Scott Brooks tried quashing again the idea his team was somehow intimidated.

"They're not going to be in awe. They're going to have respect for them," Brooks said. "We know we can beat them."

They've still got to prove it.

Notes: Spurs C DeJuan Blair has given the Thunder fits in his three NBA seasons, including 22 points on them in a March win. But San Antonio's starting center for practically the entire season didn't play for the third consecutive playoff game. "The game will tell us what's appropriate and what's not," Popovich said before tipoff. ...Just because a Boston-Oklahoma City matchup in still possible in the NBA finals doesn't mean center Kendrick Perkins is hopeful about facing his old team. "I really don't care," Perkins said of the Celtics advancing. ...Gov. Rick Perry took in his first Spurs game this year, sitting courtside next to Spurs owner Peter Holt, a major donor to the former Republican presidential candidate.

Amazon in danger as Brazil moves forward with bill, critics say

SAO PAULO, Brazil ? The Brazilian government is pressing forward with controversial legislation that critics say will lead to widespread destruction of the Amazon rain forest.

After months of heated discussion, President Dilma Rousseff on Monday presented a final version of the bill that was heavily influenced by the country's powerful agricultural lobby.

The update to the country's 1965 Forestry Code would reduce both the amount of vegetation landowners must preserve and the future penalties paid for those who currently flout environmental laws. After valuable wood is sold, much of the land in deforested areas ends up being cleared for grazing cattle and agriculture.

"The project approved in Congress is the fruit of a torturous legislative process, made to serve the interests of a small part of society that wants to increase the possibility of deforestation and give amnesty to those who have already cut it down illegally," said Maria Cecilia Wey de Brito, head of the World Wildlife Fund in Brazil.

Rousseff suffered a surprise defeat in April at the hands of Congress' ruralista voting bloc, which represents farming interests. The lawmakers managed to push through a version of the bill that rolled back environmental protections and gave amnesty to past violators.

Since then, she has faced widespread pressure from those opposed to the changes ? scientists, public figures, celebrities, as well as business leaders and politicians ? to veto the bill. However, facing long odds of winning approval for tougher environmental legislation in Congress, she announced Friday only a partial veto, leaving it much more lenient than the laws currently in place.

Though Rousseff enjoys widespread support among Brazilians, her party controls only 15% of the seats in a Congress divided between more than 20 parties. Rousseff often has difficulty corralling a coalition to support her positions and may not have been able to hold back revisions to the forestry law any more than she did, analysts say.

"In environmental terms, the law should have been vetoed completely," Luiz Antonio Martinelli, agronomist at the University of Sao Paulo, told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. "But we know that would be very difficult politically."

Over the weekend, activists from Greenpeace blocked a shipment of pig iron used by the U.S. steel industry from leaving a port, saying its production relied on illegal deforestation and slave labor. Q'orianka Kilcher, the American actress who played Pocahontas in the 2005 film "The New World," participated last week by climbing the anchor chain of a cargo ship to stop it from docking. The protest was meant raise awareness of the issue outside of Brazil, which will host the United Nations' "Rio+20" environmental conference next month.

For decades the Amazon rain forest, the world's largest, has been shrinking steadily. The forest is so vast that the Brazilian government monitors the rate of deforestation using satellite imagery.

The destruction had slowed in the last decade under tougher government enforcement, but at the same time the country has lived through an economic boom fueled largely by selling commodities. The producers of products that rely on cleared land, such as soybeans and beef, have increased the country's monetary wealth and become politically more powerful.

Environmentalists fear the new bill those interest groups helped shape could bring Brazil back to the bad old days of rapid clearing.

The government insists that the new bill, which is likely to pass, does not grant full amnesty to those who broke previous rules. But many who ignored them will have little reason to regret it.

This month, activists and journalists took a small plane over what used to be the forest in the northeastern state of Maranhao, snapping pictures of widespread illegal logging in the few remaining patches of forest in the region.

Amnesty means that "the small percentage of landowners that actually obeyed the law will end up being the clowns of history," said Tatiana Carvalho of Greenpeace Brazil. "Everyone else will get the message that they can continue on chopping down without fear."

(AP) ? A fertilizer bomb could have caused the blast that ripped through a building full of small shops, an official told The Associated Press on Tuesday as the FBI joined the investigation.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the smell of ammonia at the scene of Monday's explosion on Moi Avenue indicates the possible presence of a fertilizer bomb, which is commonly made of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil.

Among the 33 people wounded was a woman who blamed the blast on a "bearded man" who left behind a bag shortly before the detonation.

The intelligence firm IntelCenter said militants from the al-Qaida-linked Somali group al-Shabab bragged about acting as journalists and conducting interviews of survivors after the blast. IntelCenter said the development poses significant challenges to security forces and legitimate members of the media covering attacks.

The explosion sent dark smoke billowing out of a one-story building on the downtown avenue named after Kenya's second president. The blast peeled back the front corner of the building's aluminum roof, shattered windows in the building and scattered shoes, clothes and other wares on the ground. A high-rise building with a glass exterior next door was largely untouched.

Al-Shabab threatened in October to bring down Nairobi skyscrapers and referenced the July 2010 bomb attacks they masterminded in Kampala, Uganda, that killed 76 people. Al-Shabab issued the threat against Kenya after Kenyan troops moved into Somalia to attack al-Shabab fighters.

One shop worker wounded in the blast, Irene Wachira, said from her hospital bed on Monday that a bearded man came to a nearby stall three times and acted as if he were interested in buying something. Wachira said the third time he came with a bag that he left behind. The blast occurred shortly afterward, she said.

Wachira described the man as "Arabic-looking" because of his relatively light skin. A doctor told AP that another person wounded in the blast said a Somali-looking man left behind the bag. The doctor said he could not be quoted by name.

Al-Shabab has not yet made any public comment on the attack.

Police officials first indicated that Monday's explosion could have been caused by some sort of electrical malfunction but the prime minister said it was deliberate.

"This is a heinous act," Prime Minister Raila Odinga said while visiting the scene of the blast. "They want to scare us. But we will not be scared."

Microsoft Trash Talks Windows XP, Tells Businesses to Upgrade to Windows 7 Already

Most businesses don't give a flying flip about owning the latest and greatest product just for the sake of having it, especially when their current solution is working. Case in point, there are still thousands of IT departments rocking Windows XP, both because it works and also because it's perceived as being too costly to upgrade. But is it really?

Not according to Microsoft, which hammered out a blog post that essentially pleads with businesses running Windows XP to upgrade to Windows 7, if for no other reason than to save money. Wait, what?

"Organizations that continue to retain a Windows XP environment not only are leaving themselves exposed to security risks and support challenges, but also are waiting budget dollars that would be better used in modernizing their IT investments," International Data Corporation (IDC) stated in a whitepaper funded by Microsoft.

Microsoft points out some key findings in IDC's whitepaper, all of which come to the conclusion that "staying on Windows XP is an expensive investment when Windows 7 provides dramatic savings." For example, IDC found that base IT and end user labor costs supporting Windows XP is now about five times more than the cost of running Windows 7. Those are wasted funds, as far as Microsoft is concerned.

If all that weren't enough, putting off the inevitable only leads to higher costs in the long run.

"IDC found the longer you wait, the pricier supporting Windows XP gets: IT labor costs go up 25 percent in the fourth year of continuing to run Windows XP past deadline, and user productivity suffers as well, with an increased cost of 23 percent. In the fifth year, IT labor increases by an additional 29 percent, and user productivity costs jump up a staggering 40 percent," Microsoft says.

You can read Microsoft's full argument for upgrading here.

Iran: Enriched uranium traces a 'technical issue'

World powers negotiators arrive at the Baghdad International Airport in Iraq, Wednesday, May 23, 2012. (AP Photo/Hadi Mizban)

(AP) ? A top Iranian nuclear negotiator said traces of enriched uranium discovered at an underground bunker came from a "routine technical issue," the country's official IRNA news agency reported on Saturday.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Tehran's envoy to the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, was responding to a report by the nuclear watchdog in which it said it had found radioactive traces at an Iranian site.

The uranium found was at level that is slightly closer to the threshold needed to arm nuclear missiles than Iran's previous highest-known enrichment grade.

The IAEA said Friday in the report that it was asking Tehran for a full explanation about the traces. But the report was careful to avoid any suggestion that Iran was intentionally increasing the level of its uranium enrichment.

Iran said the find was a technical glitch, according to the report. Analysts and diplomats said Iran's version sounded plausible.

Soltanieh said the issue was blown out of proportion for political reasons.

"This issue shows that some intend to damage the existing constructive cooperation between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency," he was quoted as saying.

The West suspects Iran is pursuing a weapons program. Tehran denies the charge, saying its nuclear program is aimed at peaceful purposes like power generation and cancer treatment.

Consumers' mood rises as pump prices fall

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

At least we?re saving money at the gas pump.

That seems to be the takeaway from the latest monthly read on the sentiment of American consumers by the widely watched Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan survey.

The index moved up to 79.3 in May, from 76.4 in April, bouncing off a deep bottom. Last August, when Congress nearly drove the Treasury into default,?the index fell to levels of gloom normally seen in a deep recession.

Helped by?an ongoing slide in gasoline prices, half of all consumers said the economy had improved during the past year. Buying plans for vehicles and household durables also improved, helped by expectations for bigger paychecks. Wealthier households are expecting their incomes to rise by 2 percent?in the year ahead; lower income households expect just a 0.3 percent gain.

The main driver of the brighter outlook seems to be the very visible gains consumers are seeing when they buy gasoline.

??Pump prices have been falling since early April, helping improve consumer mood over the recent jitters of a volatile stock market and less than stellar job prospects,? said Yinbin Li, an economist at IHS Global Insight.

But analysts who track the ups and downs of consumer sentiment note that American households are still skittish as the economy stages its weakest recovery in a half century.

"Unfortunately, consumer confidence is still extremely vulnerable to a reversal, as occurred in the past two years," said survey director Richard Curtin. "While their most optimistic expectation for job growth could go unfulfilled without much harm, if the recent slowdown in job growth persists in the months ahead, it could form the basis for a third retreat in confidence."

The list of possible sentiment buzzkills includes another round of Congressional brinksmanship over the federal deficit, a looming man-made disaster being dubbed the ?fiscal cliff.? Unless Congress acts by the end of the year, the economy will be subjected to the twin shocks of across-the-board tax increases and massive spending cuts.

The improvement in confidence has also followed a continued drop in the unemployment rate, which fell to 8.1 percent in April after peaking at 10 percent in late 2009. Economist say that decline will likely slow unless the pace of monthly job creation picks up from recent levels.

Attention Santa Maria Customer Service Pros! | Santa Maria CA Mxi ...

Santa Maria CSR home business If you are Santa Maria customer service pro, you will do great with a Xocai XoBiotic Squares business. Let me explain.

Some Santa Maria entrepreneurs who consider starting a Xocai XoBiotic Squares home business without prior business experience wonder if they can be successful.

I tell them that it is helpful to understand some basic business principles. One key principle is Focusing on the Customer Customer service specialists know exactly what this means.

Why do some online business owners in Santa Maria fail? They take their eye off the customer. Successful Santa Maria small business owners never lose sight of who keeps them in business.

It is an easy trap to fall into. Most first-time Santa Maria entrepreneurs start the whole process by putting all their energy and resources into the product. If they never shift that to the customer, their home business never gets to the next level. This is understandable; it is the owner?s passion for the product that spurred the creation of the home business in the first place.

It doesn?t matter if you are selling the most wonderful product in the world, if it doesn?t satisfy your Santa Maria customer, your business will fold.

With a network marketing business like the Xocai XoBiotic Squares opportunity, we have eliminated this problem because the product is all taken care of. The research and development, testing, manufacturing, and delivery system for Xocai XoBiotic Squares is in place. Xocai XoBiotic Squares brand awareness is growing in Santa Maria and throughout the world as it receives enthusiastic MLM reviews and favorable media attention.

To make a Xocai XoBiotic Squares business grow, a customer service rep/entrepreneur can do what they do best: single-mindedly focus on the customers.

Gov. Walker, Mayor Tom Barrett Face-Off

May 25, 2012 Updated May 25, 2012 at 10:11 PM CDT

DULUTH, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - It was Milwaukee mayor versus standing governor at Friday's debate as challenger Democrat Tom Barrett took on current Republican Governor Scott Walker.

It was the first of two televised debates, and jobs were again a big talking point.

Job numbers in campaign ads have been a source of contention between the two candidates. Friday was no different. Both parties defended their job numbers.

They also debated collective bargaining reforms, the proposed mine near Mellen as well as the reason this election is happening in the first place.

While Barrett says Walker has caused neighbors to not be able to speak to neighbors because of politics, Governor Walker defended his reforms saying no one's talking about them anymore because the reforms are working, but he would change the process in the future.

Money from outside has been pouring in final weeks ahead of the election.

If Governor Scott Walker were to lose, he would be only the third recalled governor in the U.S. in history.

The election will be held June 5.

Several polls have been showing Walker with a slight lead.

Fort Collins Whiplash Exam - Buy From Best News Authority

If you are in an auto accident what is likely your next move? More often than not, unless it?s a severe accident, all of the focus of the people involved is on the automobiles and the financial consequences attached to fixing the vehicles. Sure, if you don?t fix your car it may cause long term problems that will cost more and more over time, but you can always buy a new car.
