Exercise may lead to better school performance for kids with ADHD

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? A few minutes of exercise can help children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder perform better academically, according to a new study led by a Michigan State University researcher.

The study, published in the current issue of the Journal of Pediatrics, shows for the first time that kids with ADHD can better drown out distractions and focus on a task after a single bout of exercise. Scientists say such "inhibitory control" is the main challenge faced by people with the disorder.

"This provides some very early evidence that exercise might be a tool in our nonpharmaceutical treatment of ADHD," said Matthew Pontifex, MSU assistant professor of kinesiology, who led the study. "Maybe our first course of action that we would recommend to developmental psychologists would be to increase children's physical activity."

While drugs have proven largely effective in treating many of the 2.5 million school-aged American children with ADHD, a growing number of parents and physicians worry about the side effects and costs of medication.

In the study, Pontifex and colleagues asked 40 children aged 8 to 10, half of whom had ADHD, to spend 20 minutes either walking briskly on a treadmill or reading while seated. The children then took a brief reading comprehension and math exam similar to longer standardized tests. They also played a simple computer game in which they had to ignore visual stimuli to quickly determine which direction a cartoon fish was swimming.

The results showed all of the children performed better on both tests after exercising. In the computer game, those with ADHD also were better able to slow down after making an error to avoid repeat mistakes -- a particular challenge for those with the disorder.

Pontifex said the findings support calls for more physical activity during the school day. Other researchers have found that children with ADHD are less likely to be physically active or play organized sports. Meanwhile, many schools have cut recess and physical education programs in response to shrinking budgets.

"To date there really isn't a whole lot of evidence that schools can pull from to justify why these physical education programs should be in existence," he said. "So what we're trying to do is target our research to provide that type of evidence."

Pontifex conducted the study for his doctoral dissertation at the University of Illinois before joining the MSU faculty. His co-investigators included his adviser, kinesiology professor Charles Hillman, and Daniel Picchietti, a pediatrician at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign, Ill. The research was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Peugeot reviews options to support banking unit

PARIS (Reuters) - French carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen said it was reviewing options to enable its banking unit to maintain sufficient financing volumes for its clients and dealerships as the threat of downgrade to junk status hangs over the division's debt.

PSA was responding to a report by French daily Le Figaro that the French Finance Ministry and national banks were negotiating a rescue plan for Banque PSA Finance (BPF), with a decision possible within days.

Le Figaro said the plan involved a commitment by banks to postpone the payment date of 4 billion euros ($5.21 billion) of debt and bring new credit lines of 1.5 billion to BPF, while the state would provide a guarantee for around 4 billion euros.

"The management of PSA is reviewing different options to set up solutions enabling Banque PSA to maintain sufficient financing volumes for its end customers and its dealer network for the carmaking unit and the company as a whole to function well," a spokesman for PSA told Reuters.

He said no decision had been made regarding the terms or nature of any solution.

The decision by ratings agencies Moody's and Standard & Poor's to cut PSA's debt rating in July and the former's move to put BPF on review for possible downgrade meant BPF could be pushed into junk status "despite its intrinsic solidity", he said.

The spokesman added that the unit had an "extremely solid solvency ratio of 13.30 percent" based on Core Tier One, a "high level of profitability" and "appropriate liquidity".

BNP Paribas , Credit Agricole , Natixis and Societe Generale as well as foreign banks which represent 50 percent of the loans outstanding, are involved in the BPF discussions, Le Figaro said.

BPF finances Peugeot and Citroen dealers as well as offering credit facilities to customers.

Shares in PSA were 2.5 percent higher by 0709 GMT, outperforming a 1.4 percent gain in the European sector index <.sxap>.

Emily Yoffe: Good afternoon, everyone. I look forward to your questions.

Q. I Teach My Former Affair Partner's Kids: I am a single middle-school teacher in his early 40s. Two years ago I had a sexual affair with the mother of two students who attended the school where I teach. A year ago, her husband caught us, and the affair ended. Until this year, I have never taught one of my former affair partner's daughters, which I guess made it easier for her husband to stomach my working at his daughters' school. Now I have the elder child in one of my classes. Because I coach the volleyball team and the younger daughter took up the sport this year, I now also have nearly daily contact with her, too. I know it was stupid and wrong to sleep with a married woman; I make no apologies for my behavior. That said, I was never in love with my affair partner, and I have no interest in rekindling our affair. She and her husband don't believe me. If I ever compliment or speak to their daughters?I assume they find out because they interrogate the girls?one or both of them will email me to tell me to watch it. She threatens to go to my boss if I interact with her daughters too much and "expose" me. Last week I gave the elder daughter a C-minus on a poorly written essay, and they accused me of punishing her because the affair ended. I do not know how I can teach or coach my students if I cannot speak to them or give them the grades they deserve. Frankly, I'm wondering if I should talk to my boss about this and take away their power to threaten me. Another part of me wants to tell them I am not interested in the mom and just want to do my job.

A: So Mom, after repeatedly and voluntarily exposing herself to you, now threatens to ruin you as a way, I suppose, of showing solidarity with her cuckolded husband. As you've learned, it's a very poor career move to have a year's worth of private parent-teacher conference at your place. I think you need to discuss your situation with a representative from your teacher's union (if you belong to one) or a lawyer, or both. Before you do anything you need to find out if your affair with a parent is a firing offense. Only once you understand your legal situation should you act. If it's safe for you to tell the principal, that certainly would disarm the threat these parents now hold over you. I always wondered how middle-school teachers do their jobs?kids that age are such an irrational mess of raging hormones. But I guess some people just never outgrow that stage. I'm feeling so sorry for the daughters. As if being a middle school student isn't hard enough, those girls now have to endure a confusing and highly emotional daily grilling from Mom and Dad about the behavior of Mr. Chips.

Q. Texting Troubles: The other day I gave a friend of mine a ride to work. While driving, my daughter sent me a message which I quickly checked and responded to. My friend took the opportunity to chide me on the danger of texting while driving, saying I was being irresponsible. I would have agreed with her until she compared what I did to drunk driving. I lost a sibling to a drunk driver when I was young, so I know just how bad it can be, and what I did is not nearly the same thing. I barely even want to talk to my friend after she hit that nerve, but now she has the gall to keep asking me to take her to work. I don't care that she gives me gas money, I don't want to go out of my way to do her any more favors until she apologizes. What's the best way to get my message across to her?

A: You're not obligated to give anyone a ride to work. The friend you were doing a favor for, however, was not wrong about texting while driving. Just take a look at the literature about the mayhem that can happen in a few seconds of removing your concentration from the road and instead being mentally and physically engaged elsewhere. I assume your friend did not know about your personal tragedy. So just be direct with her. Tell her that her comment about drunk driving was deeply upsetting to you and why. Don't demand an apology, just see if one is forthcoming and how you feel if you get one. And please, when you're driving turn off your phone. You may think you're that specially skilled driver who can text and drive, but consider how you'd feel if you were the cause of someone else's tragedy.

Q. Disconnected From Husband After Orgasm: Please help. I love my husband. He is affectionate, interesting, smart, and even does his share of the housework. The only problem is in bed. Although I usually orgasm during sex with him, instead of feeling emotional satisfaction and closeness afterward, I feel sad and disconnected. With past boyfriends, I always felt the rush of "bonding" chemicals, even when I didn't want to. What could be going wrong now? And please, don't bother to suggest couples counseling. My husband would be crushed if he knew.

A: Fake it. Not your orgasm, because you're fortunate to have one, fake those bonding feelings. Reach out to your husband, hug and stroke him. Engaging in this ritual could reorient your feelings and lift you out of your temporary sadness. What you're experiencing is not at all unusual. The French call it "la petite mort," describing the feeling of melancholy that sometimes descends post-orgasm. Just knowing you are not alone, and that you can act close even if you don't feel it, might be enough to get you past this.

Q. Presumptuous Boyfriend: I live alone in a tiny studio apartment. My fridge is almost empty because I mostly eat out. I also get rid of anything I don't use. People who come over say my place looks bare but I like it that way. Recently I went away for two weeks and gave my key to my boyfriend for emergency. He said he would come over some time and let some fresh air in so I agreed. When I got back from my trip, I found that he filled up my fridge, bought me clothes, and a bunch of household items I will probably never use for the rest of my life. He left a letter saying he didn't realize I "live like this" and that he cried when he saw I barely had anything to live on. All up, I think he would have spent about a thousand dollars on buying me all that stuff. I know I should be appreciative, but I feel annoyed and angry that he presumed I needed all of this. I now have to either get rid of everything or live with the clutter. What should I say to my boyfriend? I don't know whether to say thanks or feel creeped out.

A: Your boyfriend can't be much of a boyfriend if he's never been to your place and doesn't know that you prefer a monkish (presumably except for having sex with him) existence. It only makes sense that when going away you empty your fridge, and it's a nice gesture to find a loved one has gotten you some food. It's not such a nice gesture to get a note implying you're mentally unbalanced, the way you live is disturbed, and your boyfriend was reduced to tears to find out about the real you. That said, explain to your boyfriend you appreciate his desire to help you, but your ascetic lifestyle suits you and the suits now in your closet and the other items don't. Say you hope he kept the receipts because you just can't live in your tiny studio with all this clutter. If he doesn't understand your objections, maybe as a further act of decluttering, you need to get rid of him.

Q. He's Dating the Baby Sitter!: When I was in high school, I baby-sat for the Millers' two young kids. After I left for college, Mr. and Mrs. Miller divorced. I ran into Tom Miller (the father) at a bar a year ago. We started dating a little bit after that. We have fallen in love, and Tom has told his ex-wife about me. He said she's a little weirded out. He also confessed that the two of them thought I had a crush on him; I didn't until I ran into him as an adult. I am going to his daughter's birthday party tomorrow, and I will encounter many people I knew growing up, this time as Tom's girlfriend. I don't feel we have anything about which we should be embarrassed, but I do think the birthday will be a little awkward. I worry a bit that the ex Mrs. Miller will treat me like a baby sitter and not an adult. How do I establish myself as her equal and not the teenager who used to watch her kids?

More drugs implicated in fungal meningitis outbreak

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Aspergillus (left) and Exserohilum (right), the two molds linked with the ongoing outbreak of fungal meningitis.

By Maggie Fox, NBC News

Two more drugs have been implicated in the ongoing outbreak of fungal meningitis linked to contaminated pain injections, federal health officials said Monday.

Both come from the same pharmacy, New England Compounding Center, that distributed the steroids suspected of sickening at least 214 people and killing 15 of them, the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.?

One is a steroid called triamcinolone acetonide and another is a product used during heart surgery. While the FDA hasn?t confirmed that the two products are to blame, it?s issued a warning.

?A patient with possible meningitis potentially associated with epidural injection of an additional NECC product, triamcinolone acetonide, has been identified through active surveillance and reported to FDA,? the agency said in a statement.

?Triamcinolone acetonide is a type of steroid injectable product made by NECC. The cases of meningitis identified to date have been associated with methylprednisolone acetate, another similar steroid injectable product.? Both can be injected into the spine. The FDA didn't specify what the triamcinolone was being used for in this case. Methylprednisolone was being used to treat pain.

Until now, just three lots of methylprednisolone made by NECC had been suspected ? but as many as 14,000 patients were treated with steroid from those three batches.

?In addition, two transplant patients with Aspergillus fumigatus infection who were administered NECC cardioplegic solution during surgery have been reported,? the FDA added. ?Cardioplegic solution is used to induce cardiac muscle paralysis during open heart surgery to prevent injury to the heart.?

The agency said it is still investigating. ?FDA has not confirmed that these three infections were, in fact, caused by an NECC product,? it said.

?At this point in FDA?s investigation, the sterility of any injectable drugs, including ophthalmic drugs that are injectable or used in conjunction with eye surgery, and cardioplegic solutions produced by NECC are of significant concern, and out of an abundance of caution, patients who received these products should be alerted to the potential risk of infection,? FDA added.

?At this time, no cases of infection have been reported in connection with any NECC-produced ophthalmic drug that is injectable or used in conjunction with eye surgery, but FDA believes this class of products could present potentially similar risks of infection.?

The FDA has warned NECC about eye drugs before. In 2006 it issued a long and detailed warning letter to the pharmacy, saying it was going far beyond its licensed authority in packaging and compounding drugs.

It took a special interest in the company?s repackaging of Avastin, a cancer drug. Avastin stops tumors from growing by starving them of blood supply. It can also help treat a common form of blindness called wet macular degeneration using the same mechanism.

The drug?s maker, Roche, has a different formulation of Avastin that is packaged specifically to be injected into the eye. This drug, called Lucentis, costs as much as $2,000 per dose, compared to $150 a pop for Avastin when reformulated by a compounding ?pharmacist. NECC was taking Avastin and making an injectable version. The dose needed to treat the eye is much lower than the dose needed for treating colon and other cancers.

?FDA is particularly concerned about the manipulation of sterile products when a sterile container is opened or otherwise entered to conduct manipulations,? the agency said in its 2006 warning letter to NECC. ?The moment a sterile container is opened and manipulated, a quality standard (sterility) is destroyed and previous studies supporting the standard are compromised and are no longer valid. We are especially concerned with the potential microbial contamination associated with splitting Avastin - a single-use, preservative-free, vial -- into multiple doses.?

Microbes that get into such an injection could damage vision or even blind patients. ?The absence of control over storage, and delays before use after repackaging, only exacerbate these concerns,? the FDA said. It also warned NECC about other eye drugs it was preparing, and the latest notice appears to reflect those concerns.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting and sensitivity to light.?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its count of people affected by the outbreak. CDC says 214 people in 15 states have been infected. Most have meningitis, but two have infections apparently caused by steroid injections in the joints, including the ankle.

CDC also?updated its guidance to doctors treating patients affected by the outbreak. Only patients who show clear signs of infection should be treated, the CDC says. At least two patients don?t have meningitis, but have evidence of infection from a steroid injection into a joint, including a patient in Michigan who was injected in the ankle.

?

Patients will likely have to undergo months of treatment with two antifungal drugs, voriconazole and amphotericin B.??Adequate duration of antifungal treatment is unknown, but patients likely will require prolonged therapy tailored by the clinical response to treatment,? CDC said.

But patients who have symptoms such as headache but who don?t show signs of inflammation should not get antifungal drugs, but should instead be watched carefully, the CDC advised. The two antifungal drugs can cause serious side effects, including kidney damage.

Federal officials recognized the doctors may be besieged and offered them a break. ?We ask you to use your clinical judgment in deciding which patients are at risk and contact those patients in whatever communications mode you prefer, whether it is email, phone or letter. Face-to-face communication with patients is not necessary,? the FDA said.

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets ...

The prostrate is a small, men?s-only gland. It surrounds the first part of the tube which carries urine from the bladder to the penis. It produces the thick white fluid which mixes with the sperm and which we all know as semen.

Prostate cancer can take years to develop, but can spread to the bones.

Prostate cancer is not common in men under 40, but it becomes increasingly common in later ages. It is one of the most common causes of death from cancer in men over 75.

Running in the family Prostate cancer seems to run in some families. Having a father or a brother with prostate cancer doubles a man?s risk of getting the disease himself. The diet dodgers There is evidence that if you eat lots of fats and too few fresh fruits and vegetables, your chances of developing prostate cancer are higher than normal.

Most cases of early prostate cancer cause no symptoms and are detected only during a medical screening. If you?re heading for 50 and haven?t been screened, get screened. Especially if any of the following sound familiar:

1. You get stage fright in front of the urinal even when there?s no-one around, and passing urine is difficult.
2. You find blood in your urine.
3. You find yourself having to run to the toilet as often as your wife, especially at night.
4. Peeing hurts.
5. You have any of these symptoms as well as pains in the lower back, upper thighs or pelvic area. Research shows that diets high in calcium and low in fructose (fruit sugar) increase your chances of prostate cancer. Some fruits and vegetables containing high levels of something called Iycopenes are thought to lower your risk. They are cooked or raw tomatoes, grapefruit and watermelon. The mineral selenium is thought to lower the risk for prostate cancer.

Regular physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight is believed to help reduce the risk for prostate cancer.
