Benefits of taking your dog to work may not be far-fetched

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Man's best friend may make a positive difference in the workplace by reducing stress and making the job more satisfying for other employees, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University study.

Stress is a major contributor to employee absenteeism, morale and burnout and results in significant loss of productivity and resources. But a preliminary study, published in the March issue of the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, found that dogs in the workplace may buffer the impact of stress during the workday for their owners and make the job more satisfying for those with whom they come into contact.

The VCU researchers compared employees who bring their dogs to work, employees who do not bring their dogs to work and employees without pets in the areas of stress, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and support.

"Although preliminary, this study provides the first quantitative study of the effects of employees' pet dogs in the workplace setting on employee stress, job satisfaction, support and commitment," said principal investigator Randolph T. Barker, Ph.D., professor of management in the VCU School of Business.

"Dogs in the workplace can make a positive difference," he said. "The differences in perceived stress between days the dog was present and absent were significant. The employees as a whole had higher job satisfaction than industry norms."

The study took place at Replacements, Ltd., a service-manufacturing-retail company located in Greensboro, N.C., which employs approximately 550 people. Approximately 20 to 30 dogs are on the company premises each day. The study took place over a period of one work week in the company setting, during which time participants completed surveys and collected saliva samples. Pagers were assigned to prompt employees to complete surveys during the day.

The researchers did not observe a difference between the three employee groups on stress hormone levels, which was measured via a saliva sample, in the morning, but during the course of the work day, self-reported stress declined for employees with their dogs present and increased for non-pet owners and dog owners who did not bring their dogs to work. The team noted that stress significantly rose during the day when owners left their dogs at home compared to days they brought them to work.

According to Barker, the team observed unique dog-related communication in the workplace that may contribute to employee performance and satisfaction. For example, he said, although not part of the study, that employees without a dog were observed requesting to take a co-worker's dog out on a break. These were brief, positive exchanges as the dogs were taken and returned and also resulted in an employee break involving exercise.

Barker said that other findings revealed mostly positive comments from employees such as "pets in the workplace can be a great bonus for employee morale ?," "having dogs here is great stress relief" and "dogs are positive; dogs increase coworker cooperation."

"The effect of pets in reducing the impact of stress and enhancing communication found in other settings may extend to the workplace," said Barker.

"Pet presence may serve as a low-cost, wellness intervention readily available to many organizations and may enhance organizational satisfaction and perceptions of support. Of course, it is important to have policies in place to ensure only friendly, clean and well-behaved pets are present in the workplace," he said.

According to Barker, further research with larger sample sizes within the organizational setting is needed to replicate the findings of this initial study.

Schubert, Ph.D., assistant professor of biostatistics at the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Images capture split personality of dense suspensions

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Stir lots of small particles into water, and the resulting thick mixture appears highly viscous. When this dense suspension slips through a nozzle and forms a droplet, however, its behavior momentarily reveals a decidedly non-viscous side. University of Chicago physicists recorded this surprising behavior in laboratory experiments using high-speed photography, which can capture action taking place in one hundred-thousandths of a second or less.

UChicago graduate student Marc Miskin and Heinrich Jaeger, the William J. Friedman and Alicia Townsend Friedman Professor in Physics, expected that the dense suspensions in their experiments would behave strictly like viscous liquids, which tend to flow less freely than non-viscous liquids. Viscosity certainly does matter as the particle-laden liquid begins to exit the nozzle, but not at the moment where the drop's thinning neck breaks in two.

New behavior appears to arise from feedback between the tendencies of the liquid and what the particles within the liquid can allow. "While the liquid deforms and becomes thinner and thinner at a certain spot, the particles also have to move with that liquid. They are trapped inside the liquid," Jaeger explained. As deformation continues, the particles get in each other's way.

"Oil, honey, also would form a long thread, and this thread would become thinner and break in a way characteristic of a viscous liquid," Jaeger said. "The particles in a dense suspension conspire to interact with the liquid in a way that, when it's all said and done, a neck forms that shows signs of a split personality: It thins in a non-viscous fashion, like water, all the while exhibiting a shape more resembling that of its viscous cousins."

It took Miskin and Jaeger six months to become convinced that the viscosity of the suspending liquid was a minor player in their experiments. "It is a somewhat heretical view that this viscosity should not matter," Jaeger said. "Who would have thought that?"

Miskin and Jaeger presented their results in the March 5 online early edition and the March 20 print edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In their experiments, Miskin and Jaeger compared a variety of pure liquids to mixtures in which particles occupy more than half the volume.

"The results indicate that what we know about drop breakup from pure liquids does not allow us to predict phenomena observed in their experiments," said Jeffrey Morris, professor of chemical engineering at City College of New York. "The most striking and interesting result is the fact that, despite these being very viscous mixtures, the viscosity plays little role in the way a drop forms."

Few studies have examined droplet formation in dense suspensions. As Morris noted, such work could greatly impact applications such as inkjet printing, combustion of slurries involving coal in oil, and the drop-by-drop deposition of cells in DNA microarrays.

Scientific defiance

In these applications particles often are so densely packed that their behavior defies a simple scientific description, one that might only take into account average particle size and the fraction of the liquid that the particles occupy, Morris explained. The UChicago study showed that particles cause deformations and often protrude through the liquid, rendering any such description incomplete until fundamental questions about the interface between a liquid mixture and its surroundings are properly addressed.

"Miskin and Jaeger provide arguments for the importance of these protrusions in their work and suggest that the issue is of broader relevance to any flow where a particle-laden liquid has an interface with another fluid," Morris said.

Miskin and Jaeger verified their results by systematically evaluating different viscosities, particle sizes and suspending liquids, and developed a mathematical model to explain how the droplet necks evolve over time until they break apart.

One initially counter-intuitive prediction of this model was that larger particles should produce behavior resembling that in pure water without any particles. "If you want to make it behave more like a pure non-viscous liquid, you want to make the particles large," said Jaeger, who finds himself intrigued by nature's seemingly endless store of surprises.

Miskin and Jaeger indeed observed this when the particle size approached a significant fraction of the nozzle diameter, making the particles visible to the naked eye.

"You think you have a pretty good idea of what should happen, and instead there's a surprise at every corner. Honestly, finding surprises is what I love about this work," Jaeger said.

Top Health Concerns for LGBT Individuals: Is It What You Think ...

?HIV/AIDS, suicide, safe sex, drug and alcohol use, depression?.as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (lgbt) people we are pretty familiar with these health concerns among our communities.

What about heart disease or cancer? Is obesity and poor fitness more than just the gay man?s solemn faux pas?

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, commonly referred to as SAMHSA (pronounced ?sam-suh?) just came out with their ?Top Health Issues for LGBT Populations Information & Resource Kit? and Heart and Disease and Cancer are listed as the top two health concerns of lesbian, gay and bisexual men and women.

The SAMHSA reports states, ?Available research related to physical health issues among transgender people is extremely limited and mainly conducted abroad. Furthermore, studies of how medical interventions, such as hormone therapy and/or sexual reassignment surgeries, affect overall physical health and well-being remain extremely limited.?

The report states that lesbians are at higher risk for breast cancers due to fewer full-term pregnancies, PAP tests and regular screenings. Full-term pregnancies produce hormones that are believed to lower a woman?s risk of contracting breast cancers, coupled with social norms of lesbians to be less likely to visit a doctor or nurse for routine health screenings.

Heart disease, cancers, injury and violence, and fitness are the four physical health concerns afflicting gay men in America. Anyone, including heterosexuals, engaging in anal sex is at higher risk of contracting anal cancer and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as the human papillomavirus (HPV) greatly increases one?s risk of contracting anal or prostate cancer. With few men receiving the HPV vaccine or being adequately screened for HPV, over half of gay men in America acquire HPV.

Now fitness among gay men isn?t the problem you might think it is. In fact, gay men are more likely than straight men to have eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia nervosa as a result ?of negative attitudes about their body image.

Though little research is conducted in America focusing on transgender individuals, what little research is available suggests that physical injury, substance abuse and mental health issues are top concerns for transgender men and women.

HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases are still high among gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. Though men who have sex with men account for approximately 4% of all men in America, they accounted for over half (53%) of new HIV/AIDS diagnosis in 2006 making men who have sex with men 44 times more likely to contract HIV than other men.

Intimate partner violence (domestic violence) continues to be significantly higher than heterosexual reports. Over half of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender men and women report experiencing intimate partner violence. Compared to heterosexual men and women, more than triple the number of lgbt people experience intimate partner violence.

Drug and alcohol abuse, suicide and depression are listed as major concerns for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender men and women.

New App Available in the Fight Against Colon Cancer -Colon ...

No one wants to hear the words, ?you have colon cancer.? For patients diagnosed with an advanced form of the disease, these words can be particularly devastating. The five-year survival rate can be a little as 6 percent. The top-of-mind question becomes, ?Which treatment or clinical trial will work for me??

That?s why the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has partnered with CollabRx to provide patients with late stage colon cancer access to cutting-edge information that could change their lives. Patients can now access the recently released Therapy Finder - Colorectal Cancer application (app) through the College?s website and patient portal, MyBiopsy.org, to find personalized information on cancer therapies. Visitors to the sites also can access the CollabRx Therapy Finder apps for lung and skin cancer.

Baseballs, beer, masks: Cuba's patron saint ready for pope

EL COBRE, Cuba (Reuters) - Dressed in a billowing pink ball gown for her 15th birthday celebrations, Lisette Catanares smiles at the myriad offerings on a shrine to Cuba's patron saint, a doll-sized figurine that Pope Benedict will visit this week.

A can of strong 'Bucanero' beer, a medal, carnival masks, signed baseballs, locks of hair: Cubans of all beliefs make offerings here when they ask for miracles and blessings from The Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, a symbol of nationalism that transcends religion.

Discovered 400 years ago, the Virgin is an important figure for both the Roman Catholic Church and Santeria, the Afro-Cuban religion that is a legacy of Cuba's slavery era and knows her as Ochun, the goddess of love.

Found floating in a bay in 1612 by fishermen, the icon was revered by Cuba's independence heroes and sits in the foothills of the Sierra Maestra mountains from which Fidel Castro and Ernesto 'Che' Guevara staged the 1959 Cuban revolution.

Now it is the centerpiece of this week's papal visit to Cuba, inspired by a procession of a replica around the island last year that drew hundreds of thousands of people.

The Church hopes it will spark a revival of faith in Cuba and boost its role as an interlocutor with the communist government on social issues, including human rights.

"I think of her as my mother," said Catanares, setting down her offering of yellow flowers to the Virgin, who sits with child swathed in a golden dress encrusted in jewels high above a white marble altarpiece.

"I like to come to see her ... I ask for health for my family and success in life." "I'm not Catholic. I believe in the Virgin. She belongs to everyone," the high school student said. "The fact the pope is coming to visit the Virgin of Charity is a great honor. I hope his visit brings peace, union, and friendship with other nations, with the United States."

Behind her, in a glass case, sits a leather, plastic and steel corset and neck brace with the message "To avoid an operation on our daughter's spine" written on the side.

"These religious practices, which are in a way magic, are a way of banishing fear and of kidding ourselves," said Father Jorge Palma, who oversees the sanctuary. "This is the home of all Cubans. Even Protestants come and tell me no-one will take away their devotion to the Virgin."

The 1954 Nobel literature prize medallion that long-time Cuba resident Ernest Hemingway donated to the icon has been safely stored away after it was briefly stolen in the 1980s.

The mother of Fidel Castro and his brother Raul Castro, who is now Cuba's president, left small golden statues of her sons in thanks after they took power in the revolution.

READY FOR 'EL PAPA'

The sanctuary of El Cobre, which lies 12 miles outside the city of Santiago de Cuba at the eastern end of the island, has been spruced up for the pontiff's visit.

He will lead a mass in honor of the Virgin on Monday in Santiago de Cuba and then visit the sanctuary early on Tuesday.

In Santiago de Cuba, just meters from where the pope will lead the mass, a placard shows a youthful Fidel thrusting a rifle into the air above the slogan: "Yesterday a rebel, hospitable today, always heroic".

While many of the town's youths are not Catholic, they are excited by the pope's visit. "The fact the pope is coming is transcendental," said 16-year-old Irenis Belkis Soto, chatting with friends in a square in Santiago de Cuba, the theme tune from "The Godfather" movie drifting through the balmy evening air from a nearby bar.

She is too young to remember Pope John Paul II's visit in 1998, but has lived all her life under the 50-year-old trade embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba and hopes the pope can help end it.

"The embargo against Cuba should not exist, and if the pope can help influence getting rid of it, Cubans would be very happy," she laughed, adding that she is happy with Cuba's revolution. "There's room for improvements here in Cuba just as anywhere, but people here live in good conditions."

Mercedes Osorio, a mother of three who lives in a modest, precarious breeze-block dwelling on the hills above Santiago de Cuba, would also like to see the pope, but she'd sooner see economic change and a higher wage. Osorio earns around $10 a month serving food to children at a music school, which she says is not enough to feed her family.

"I hope the pope's visit produces something better for Cubans, that people have more humanity. We need a better life. What they pay us is very little, it's nowhere near enough. Life isn't easy," she said.

Church officials say the pope's agenda is too tight to be able to meet with dissidents like the Damas de Blanco, or Ladies in White, who decry the government's human rights record and who are lobbying for the release of political prisoners.

Father Jose Conrado, an outspoken priest whose local parish is making a replica of the Virgin which will be sent to Miami and erected in a park on the Bay, thinks the Cuban Church is treating the government too delicately.

"It would be worthwhile for the pope to receive a representative of the Ladies in White," he said at his parish of Santa Teresita in Santiago de Cuba as he cooked pasta in a solar oven in the garden. "The pope is coming to a country that is in a very difficult situation from a moral, social, spiritual and economic point of view."

Benedict said on Friday that communism had failed in Cuba and offered the Church's help in developing a new economic model. Economic reforms launched by President Raul Castro encourage more private businesses but they are aimed at preserving communist rule, not weakening it.

Ciara Torres-Spelliscy: Could Connecticut Be the First to Get Serious About Shareholders Rights Post-Citizens United?

Connecticut may be the mouse that startles the lion. Connecticut is a small state, but it has a strong record of leadership in addressing the trouble posed by money in politics. Now Connecticut may be the first state to take shareholder protections seriously post-Citizens United.

After a governor went to jail for corruption charges for accepting gifts from state contractors, Connecticut decided to regain its good name by getting serious about campaign finance reform. The Legislature pushed the reset button by adopting a ground breaking public financing system as well as pay to play restrictions on state contractors in 2005.

Also in 2010, it adopted beefed up disclosure requirements, which require political ads to show the top five donors. This small change brings more transparency to the Connecticut elections than exists almost anywhere else in the nation, including federal elections, which are still hopelessly dark.

Now in 2012, Connecticut could break ground again by requiring shareholder approval of corporate political spending. A bill pending in the Legislature would adopt this change. As I testified this morning, such a new Connecticut law would follow a best practice that has existed for a dozen years in the U.K. under the Companies Act that requires a shareholder vote to approve future political spend by U.K. companies.

Citizens United v. FEC (the 2010 Supreme Court decision) allowed corporate political spending in all of the states and federal elections. Connecticut was one of a score of states that had banned corporate money from their elections. Citizens United stripped Connecticut of its ability to protect its elections from this type of spending.

But Connecticut can still take steps to protect shareholders in companies that are now free to spend in Connecticut's elections by requiring a vote by shareholders before money is spent in an election. Here, Connecticut is building on the work of its sister states Iowa, Missouri and Louisiana, which each require board approval before corporations can spend it their elections, as well as Maryland, which mandates disclosure of political spending directly to shareholders.

Connecticut is in a federal circuit that is open to strong money in politics laws. For example, the Second Circuit recently upheld New York City's ban on corporate political contributions and the City's robust pay to play laws. In his concurrence upholding New York City's laws, Second Circuit Judge Calabresi had these choice words referencing the Bible, about the trouble with money in politics in America today:

The wider the economic disparities in a democratic society, the more difficult it becomes to convey, with financial donations, the intensity of one's political beliefs. People who care a little will, if they are rich, still give a lot. People who care a lot must, if they are poor, give only a little. Jesus's comment about the rich donors and the poor widow says it all. Today, the amount of an individual's campaign contribution reflects the strength of that individual's preferences far less than it does the size of his wallet.

Given this and other recent opinions, the Second Circuit would likely defer to Connecticut's legislative judgment.

And even Citizens United itself spoke approvingly of shareholders holding corporations accountable for their political spending. As Justice Kennedy wrote, "With the advent of the Internet, prompt disclosure of expenditures can provide shareholders and citizens with the information needed to hold corporations and elected officials accountable for their positions... Shareholders can determine whether their corporation's political speech advances the corporation's interest in making profits."

Connecticut has a clear path forward with the blessing of the Supreme Court. They can adopt a requirement that shareholders get a say on politics. With any hope, Connecticut can be the mouse that roars, exhibiting national leadership in this post-Citizens United America.

BEIJING (AP) ? China says former U.N. chief Kofi Annan will visit next week to discuss efforts to mediate an end to the crisis in Syria.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei says Annan will visit China on Tuesday and Wednesday. Annan is a joint U.N.-Arab League envoy and will visit China after traveling to Russia.

China and Russia have been chastised because they have twice vetoed U.N. resolutions criticizing Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime for its bloody crackdown on opposition.

Hong said in a statement Saturday that Annan would meet with Chinese leaders, but he did not name them. He said China attaches importance to Annan's mediation efforts.

The U.N. estimates that more than 8,000 people have been killed since an uprising began in Syria a year ago.
